WYSE
The WYSE Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are now offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities with hundreds of high schools competing. The tests are designed to present a challenge to the brightest students.
Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula. Written by teams of college and university faculty, the 7 subject areas include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics. Each member of the team competes in 2 of the 7 areas. The team score is calculated from the top two scores in each area. The competition tests are multiple choice and you are given 40 minutes to complete each test. They range in length from 30 questions (computer science) to 100 questions (English).
At Richwoods, students wishing to try out for the team should talk to Mr. Garrison, starting in December. Tryouts are held during the first two weeks of January. The first level of competition is mid-February and it wraps up with state finals in April.
The Richwoods WYSE team has made it to state every year since the mid 1990’s. We placed as high as 3rd place twice in the past along with some 4th and 5th place finishes. So be a WYSE guy (or gal) and join Richwoods fine tradition.
